S. Knox - Assignments from Pungo
Christian Academy
Overview of the 4th
Grade Year:
"Lo, children are a
heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the
womb is His reward." Psalm 127:3
I truly believe
this scripture and am so thankful the Lord
has allowed me the privilege of working
daily with His children. My prayer is
that I can help equip each child for that
special call God has for their life.
Following you will find an overview for what
we will be studying in each subject this
year.
Bible -
Students will learn that they can
find answers in the Word of God for
themselves. We will spend the year
studying the New Testament. Quizzes
will be given weekly on Fridays. This
will count for 50% of their Bible grade.
Each Monday, students will be introduced to
a new scripture memory verse. This
memory verse will be recited to me the
following Monday. This will count for
the other 50% of their Bible grade.
Science
- Students enjoy studying science
and seeing the plan of God as it is
revealed in His orderly creation. We
will be studying 9 main units in science
this year...Insects, Plants, Birds, Matter,
Energy, Geology, Oceanography, and
Astronomy. The last 6-9 weeks of the
year we will transfer to our health books.
Reading
- We will be reading from 4 readers
that contain stories and poems that develop
vocabulary skills and strengthen reading
vocabulary. Stories place special
emphasis on character and patriotism.
As we read we will learn such things as main
idea, comparing and contrasting, plot,
characters, settings and reading with
fluency and expression. Students will
receive, on average, one oral grade and 1-2
comprehension grades per week. Each
month, students will also be required to
read a chapter book containing at least 75
pages. Most, if not all, of these will
be provided by me. At the completion
of each book, students will be quizzed on
the book and do a book report.
Penmanship
- All work in 4th grade must be
done in cursive, unless otherwise
instructed. Penmanship habits formed
this school year will influence the
student's handwriting throughout their
lifetime. A penmanship test is given
weekly, usually on Friday. Periodic
quiz grades are taken from random work,
encouraging students to always do their
best.
History -
This year we will be learning the
history of our great nation. While
learning about famous people, major events,
important documents and national and local
governments, we will learn to love and
respect our country. At the same time,
we will learn to appreciate what it took and
still takes, to make this nation great.
Later on during the year, we will also learn
the history and important facts about our
state by making North Carolina scrapbooks.
These books will then be assembled at home.
More information will be sent home as we
near the time to begin our scrapbooks.
Spelling
- Each lesson includes a review of
a spelling rule and phonics rule, 1-2 US
states and their abbreviations and 5-10
vocabulary words and their definitions.
Weekly test will usually be given on
Fridays. Language
- The study of grammar and writing
is valuable in helping students to express
themselves clearly and creatively. It
teaches them to think logically and develops
analytic ability. When students see
the orderly structure of their language, we
can remind them of God's orderly plan for
the world and their lives.
Math -
Our God is an orderly, rational God who used
math as He created the world and set in into
motion. The study of math not only
prepares students to be able to function in
a "numbers based" world, but also promotes
order, structure and absolute truth.
Math tests will be sent home to be
corrected. I am encouraging you to
help your child with their corrections.
If all corrections are done correctly
(including commas, decimal points and dollar
signs) they will receive 5 points added to
their test grade. Math is cumulative,
meaning new material is based on an
understanding of previously covered
material. By doing test corrections,
we can pinpoint any problem areas and
hopefully correct them.
We will also have a math
champ of the week, 6-weeks, and year.
Students earn points for perfect homework,
tests, quizzes and speed drills. Look
in Friday's folder to see if your child was
our "Math Champ of the Week".
